Valley Christian Finds Silver Lining in 63-14 Loss

In the midst of a loss to a strong St. Joseph's team, the Crusaders found their quarterback.

The Valley Christian Crusaders found themselves in a hole with no ladder against St. Joseph Friday night as the Knights cruised to comfortable 63-14 victory at Valley Christian High.

There are few positives that come out of losing in blowout fashion, but the Crusaders fans have reason for hope as the passing game got on track against a very tough CIF-Division III opponent. Junior Patrick Avila drew the start at quarterback, tossing a pair of touchdowns for the Crusaders in his second start at the varsity level.

“I though Pat[rick] had a really good game tonight,” said Valley Christian coach Erick Streelman of his quarterback’s efforts.

The Valley Christian quarterback position was up for grabs in training camp, and Streelman said that Avila won the job in the final week of two-a-days.

St. Joseph had similar success against the Crusaders last season, winning that meeting 46-10.

Streelman hinted that he likes playing the tough non-league schedule, saying that he wanted to challenge his kids and that “hopefully it gives them something to draw back on.”

Perhaps the most exciting play was not one made by any individual on the football field, but a touching group prayer between the two teams after the game.

St. Joseph, a Catholic school from Santa Maria, agreed to take part in the group prayer as players and staff kneeled at midfield in observance of the religious tribute.
