PHOTOS: Fans Remember Donna Summer

Flowers, records and mementos were left on the late singer's Walk of Fame star on Hollywood Boulevard Thursday.

By late Thursday afternoon, Donna Summer's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame had amassed a variety of mementos left by fans following the announcement of her death in Florida. The Hollywood Historic Trust had placed a wreath filled with pink roses, yellow orchids, snapdragons and Queen Anne's lace. Fans had left handwritten messages, candles and a sparkling tiara on the star. A couple TV reporters were stationed in front of the star for the early evening broadcasts. News vans were parked close by in a line. Summer's star is located in front of 7000 Hollywood Boulevard, adjacent to the Roosevelt Hotel. She was inducted into the Walk of Fame on March 18, 1992, said Ana Martinez, spokeswoman for the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Summer received …

Friends of Artesia Library's Garden Party Helps Programs Stay Afloat

On May 4, the Friends of Artesia Library threw a Garden Party to help raise funds for books and programs at the library.

Spirits were high with the presence of camaraderie and friendship at the Friends of Artesia Library Garden Party. During the May 4 event, the Cerritos-Artesia community showed their support for an invaluable public service: the gift of reading. Held at Andy's Garden, the backyard of the late Andy Anderson – which is used by different groups for various events – the garden party's proceeds are going to be used to fund books and programs that the Artesia Library has to offer. Luckily, with the $15 entrance fee and a great turnout, it seems the library has nothing to worry about. Lisa Diaz (Anderson's daughter), who is a friend to Artesia Mayor Pro Tem Sally Zuniga Flowers, is one of the owners of Andy's Garden. Diaz offered the garden as the…

Books + food + raising money for a great cause= a great time. Nice spread on display in the pictures from the various restaurants. Terence, I'm guessing it didn't suck to cover this story. I disagree with Joanne Witt, however. There's plenty of money. Prioritization and how funds are allocated are the larger questions we ought to be tackling. Libraries were always my refuge when I was younger, …   more ›

Prayers and the Promise

Facing the biggest "wrecking ball" of his life, my brother believes faith will be rewarded. Bruce Springsteen told him so.

Editor's Note: This piece was written by a Patch columnist on the other side of the country, in West Deptford, New Jersey, and it felt like the perfect Sunday morning read. It's about faith and the healing power of music, especially when it's performed by The Boss. “For the ones who had a notion, A notion deep inside, That it ain't no sin to be glad you're alive.” I remember a time, when I was a little girl, that my brother Mark was very sick. Mark was my first brother, and at the time the youngest in the family. We were born one-two-three, the tag team of myself and Gina born a year apart, and Mark coming a few years later. So at the time I’m remembering, he was about three or four, and I was in first or second grade. I don’t remember the…

It was just a card like you get when you graduate from high school. It had her maiden name on it. She was married in 1932 so the prayer was written some time before then. I never thought to ask her where she got that prayer. She passed away in 1998.   more ›

Famed American Painter Thomas Kinkade Dies at Age 54

The artist behind the millions of paintings that adorn living room walls throughout the country died Friday at the age of 54.

The arts community today is mourning the loss of famed American painter Thomas Kinkade, 54, who died Friday at his Los Gatos home in the San Francisco Bay area. Kinkade, America's "Painter of Light," is known for his brushwork paintings depicting serene reflections of small-town Americana by way of natural landscapes, cottages and churches.  His artworks are a popular mainstream favorite, fetching some $100 million a year in sales and adorning the walls of millions of homes throughout the country. A collection of his paintings were once featured in the now defunct Thomas Kinkade Towne Center Gallery at the nearby Long Beach Towne Center. "His work always exuded warmth and beauty through a fusion of impressionism and memories of home that …

Cerritos Resident Shares the Art of Chinese Calligraphy

Cerritos resident Jim Tsai shares a bit about the benefits of calligraphy and how he mastered the art.

With the easy access of computers nowadays, it’s hard to believe that a few decades ago students in Taipei, Taiwan were required to write journal entries with brush and ink. Not only do we rarely see people’s handwritings these days, but we also rarely meet individuals who have mastered the art of calligraphy like Cerritos resident Jim Tsai. Tsai was invited to the Chinese New Year festival at Stowers Elementary earlier this year and showed his calligraphy skills by writing scripts with “luck” and “dragon” for the school.  His proficiency in calligraphy are a result of 16 years of training with a master of calligraphy in Taiwan. Though most middle students usually dislike the calligraphy journal writing back in the days, Tsai developed a …
