Marquez faces five challengers for the new 58th State Assembly District June 5.
Cerritos and Artesia elected officials are throwing their support for Downey councilman Luis Marquez in his run for the State Assembly. The Democratic candidate for the 58th district held a fundraiser at Hiwa Fusion restaurant in Cerritos last Wednesday that attracted about two dozen people. He faces a crowded primary on June 5 that includes four other Democrats and one Republican. If elected, Marquez’s number one priority is looking out for the best interests of the new districting stretching from Montebello to Cerritos—especially when it comes to finding ways to bring jobs. “The district as a whole has a high unemployment rate and I’m making sure that we’re tackling that by protecting jobs, creating jobs and education,” he said to Patch…

Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe, whose district includes Cerritos and Artesia, did not draw any opponents in his bid for a fifth term, while fellow Supervisors Mike Antonovich and Mark Ridley-Thomas each drew one opponent as the filing period for most county offices on the June 5 primary ballot ended Friday. Knabe was elected to the Cerritos City Council in 1980 and served as a councilman for eight years, including two terms as mayor. He was mayor of the city during the Cerritos Mid-Air Collision on Aug. 31, 1986, helping bring the community back on its feet following the darkest day in Cerritos' history. Knabe was first elected to the County Board of Supervisors in November of 1996 and was re-elected in 2000, 2004, and 2008 to …

The town hall Saturday didn't include a question and answer session, but Asian American elected officials from across the state who have never been contacted by the Republican Party got a chance to speak and connect. Oh, and Newt Gingrich dropped by.
The California Republican Convention Asian Town Hall in Northern California was a beginning of sorts for organized conservative Republican Asian American representation in the state. Before Michelle Steel, vice chair of the California Board of Equalization and chair of Newt Gingrich’s campaign in California, organized the town hall, as many as half of the elected officials who attended the event had never been contacted by the Republican Party for anything, a representative of her office said. Her husband, Shawn Steel, the Republican National Committeeman from California, described the surprising findings Republicans made when contacting Asian American elected officials. “We started off in Los Angeles, we hit over 40 locally elected …

The race for the unexpired two-year term comes down to the wire with Lynda Johnson ending up on top, grabbing 132 more votes than Soo Yoo, who says she will ask for a recount.
It was an election that didn't garner a lot of buzz. Sure, a myriad of campaign signs could be seen on every well-traveled corner throughout the community, but unlike other elections, it was a fairly quiet race with each candidate honed in on reaching out to the voters. And in the end, the Nov. 8 ABC School Board election proved to be a race where every vote truly counted. After months of campaigning, longtime Cerritos resident Lynda Johnson edged out fellow candidate Soo Yoo by 132 votes for the unexpired 2-year term -- the seat belonging to former boardmember Mark E. Pulido who stepped down from his post earlier this year after being elected to the Cerritos City Council. Johnson, a mother of three, who raised her children in ABC Unified …

Newly-appointed council members Tony Lima and Miguel Canales say their main priority is attracting business into the city.
As expected, the Artesia City Council canceled the upcoming November election last Wednesday and appointed the only two candidates, incumbent council member Tony Lima and Planning Commissioner Miguel Canales, to the two open council seats. Canales will not take his seat until December, when the council reorganizes and selects a new mayor. This is the second time in a decade Artesia has canceled an election, which saved the city $40,000. Only the three incumbents whose seats were up ran in the 2005 election. Mayor Victor Manalo congratulated Lima and Canales, but expressed concern about a lack of civic participation from the community. “I keep telling everybody that we’re happy saving some money but I think there’s a little part inside of…
