Fresh Flowers at the Cerritos Farmers Market

Head to the Cerritos Farmers Market today to find fresh and beautiful flowers for upcoming graduations or summer parties.

Summertime is just around the corner!  And that means it's time to shower your beloved graduates with beautiful flowers or liven up your living room with floral arrangements for all those upcoming summer shindigs.

Instead of store-bought flowers, try heading to the  on Saturday morning to get some of the freshest floral selections. This past weekend  I spoke with Jason Wenn from the Shigeru Nursery stand, and here are a few things he shared:

  • What’s in season: They are currently transitioning from spring flowers such as tulips, irises and freesias to summer flowers such as sunflowers, lisianthus and wildflowers.  Year round flowers include lilies, Gerber daisies, and Peruvian lilies.
  • What makes their flowers fresh: When you buy flowers at the farmers market, they are guaranteed to be fresh because they are locally grown.  Flowers at the grocery stores could have traveled miles from other states or have been imported.
  • Best way to store flowers: Don’t keep them in direct sunlight and keep them away from too much wind and breeze because it can dry them up.
  • Tips to make them last longer: Use preservatives or try a teaspoon of sugar together with a teaspoon of bleach. 7 Up with water also works.  Every two or three days, clip the stems and change the water.
  • Why you’ll be happy:  “It’s all about the customers,” says Wenn. “I do what I can do to help them get what they need to get.”

Wenn would be happy to answer any questions you may have and bring you the freshest flowers! And make sure you get there as early as possible for the best selection!
