Golf Classic Raises $25,000+ to Help Support At-Risk, Low Income Families

Community Family Guidance Center's 21st Annual Golf Classic event raised funds to support programs that provide mental health counseling and child abuse services.

The Community Family Guidance Center Foundation’s (CFGC) 21st Annual Golf Classic at the Rio Hondo Gulf Club in Downey last month raised $27,675, according to event organizers.

A portion of these funds will help support the organization’s programs that offer mental health counseling and child abuse prevention treatment services to more than 9,000 at-risk, low income children and their families in communities of Artesia, Bellflower, Cerritos, Downey, Hawaiian Gardens, Lakewood, Norwalk, Paramount and surrounding cities.

The May 16 event and funds raised were made possible through the corporate sponsorship from the and Los Angeles County Fourth District Supervisor Don Knabe as well as support from various individuals and families.

There were 72 golfers who attended the golf tournament, which included a putting contest, barbecue lunch and a shotgun start at noon. The evening's festivities included a cocktail hour and buffet dinner emceed by Dr. Bob Huglett. Sponsors were also recognized during the evening portion of the event. 

Cerritos Mayor Pro Tem Jim Edwards, who is Secretary of both the Center’s and CFGC Foundation’s Board of Directors, spoke of the importance of the event and how the funds raised would help expand the organization’s services.  He also highlighted the Center's Safety Bear Program, which teaches elementary-aged children about child abuse prevention. The evening ended with a raffle and a silent auction.
