Intersection Near Los Cerritos Center Voted Worst by Patch Readers

The oft busy intersection at South Street and Gridley Road is the most hated by Cerritos-Artesia residents, according to the latest Patch Readers' Choice poll.

Cerritos can now claim the most hated intersection in the neighborhood  the South Street and Gridley Road intersection near the the worst in the area.

The busy intersection equipped with red light cameras earned 30 percent of the votes in our  last week.

During the public comments section at the April 23 Cerritos City Council meeting, Monica Manalo -- Artesia resident and wife of Artesia councilman Victor Manalo -- expressed concern over the often backed up traffic at the intersection, especially for those traveling south on Gridley Road. Manalo asked the council to consider adding an additional right-hand turn lane from Gridley Road to South Street to improve the flow of traffic.

One patch reader said of the intersection, "Gridley and South is always a choke point. And it does not help that the traffic cam fires randomly sometimes when there are no cars in the intersection at all."

Another reader named Mary chimed in with similar sentiment, "South and Gridley Rd is the worst!"

Earning 15 percent of the votes, Artesia Boulevard and Bloomfield Avenue -- another Cerritos intersection with a red light camera -- came in second place.

In third place with 11 percent of the votes was Carmenita Road and 183rd Street, which was one of two intersections in the area most associated with traffic accidents in 2011, according to the sheriff's department.

What Are the Worst Intersections According to Traffic Accident Stats?

According to Deputy Tim Britt of the , the top two intersections most associated with traffic accidents last year were:

  • Pioneer Boulevard and 195th Street -- 12 accidents
  • Carmenita Road and 183rd Street -- 10 accidents
