Living Green in Cerritos and Artesia

See what upcoming events can help you continue to protect our home planet.

Each Spring, the flowers bloom, the weather gets warmer, and we are reminded of how much we value our environment. If you weren't able to properly celebrate Earth Day on April 22, don't fret. Cerritos and Artesia residents still have a variety of events and activities to choose from that will help you "live green."

Recycled Art Contest
As a part of Cerritos' Community Spring Festival, residents and students in schools in the City of Cerritos are invited to create works of art made of completely recycled materials. Projects are due by 5 p.m. on Friday, April 29. Winners will be announced by the Cerritos City Council at 4:30 p.m. on April 30 at the Spring Festival.

Love the Rain, Hate the Weeds
There is no better way to appreciate the Earth than to get down and dirty with it. The City of Artesia is planning their second volunteer clean-up event to tidy up the city's weeds and vines. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own gardening supplies. Teams will gather at the  on May 7 at 7:30 a.m. and refreshments will be served.

Be In the Know
One of the best ways to live green is to familiarize yourself with the eco-friendly efforts in your community. The Green Cerritos program has a variety of efforts including Green IncentivesUrban Forest/Landscaping, and Energy Efficiency Efforts.

Remember to Recycle
Due to new technologies, the rules of recycling are changing and residents can recycle a wider variety of household materials. In order to maximize your recycling, please call Public Works Department at (562) 916-1226 or CalMet Services, Inc. at (562) 259-1239 to request a brochure that outlines what types of trash can go in your black, blue, and green trash bins.

Take Public Transportation
With gas prices soaring through the roof, public transportation will not only save the environment, but it will also save you money. Use websites such as Google's Transit Trip Planner to plan your trips via public transportation. You can also refer to the Cerritos On Wheels website.
