Nearly 3,000 SoCal Edison Customers in Cerritos, Artesia & La Palma Affected by Tuesday Power Outage

A failure of underground equipment left thousands in the dark Tuesday afternoon.

A failure in underground equipment left thousands of Southern California Edison customers in Cerritos, Artesia and La Palma without power Tuesday, according to a utility company spokesman.

The outage near South Street and Carmenita Boulevard occurred just after 10 a.m. on April 16, immediately affecting 2,747 homes and businesses spanned across the three communities, SCE spokesman David Song told Patch.

"The outage was due to some failed underground equipment," Song said, adding that power had been restored to a majority of the affected area but as of about 12:15 p.m. there were still 360 customers in the dark within the borders of Cantrece Street, Shoemaker Avenue, Cranleigh Street and Bechard Avenue.

"We have crews on the scene right now, but unfortunately we don't have an ETA for restoration," he said. "When it comes to failure of underground equipment, restoration does take longer because there are more safety precautions involved in isolating the problem area."
