"We make about $6,000 total with both sales," said Friends' President Janice Dawson. "So you can imagine that's a lot of books we're selling!"

Aside from the biannual book sale, the volunteer group also sells donated literary items through their store located on the first floor of the library.

The Friends prides itself on hosting a variety of programs that offer unique fun to participants while also celebrating the magic and power of reading, especially for children.

Some of the programs hosted by the Friends include the , the Annual Art & Writing Contest for Children, Romance Tea, Scholastic Book Fair, and the Summer Reading Program.

"Reading opens up the world to them (children)," said Dawson, who spent 31 years as a teacher in Huntington Park. "Children who can read feel like they can do anything. They just pick up a good book and instantly they can transport themselves."
