Project Found Sound at the Cerritos Library

The Cerritos Library is offering the free and fun musical workshop called Project Found Sound -- a two-part workshop for students between the ages of 11 and 18 who are interested learning how people from various cultures create musical instruments out of everyday materials (“Found Sound”).

The workshop will be held from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Library's Skyline Room on Thursday, April 14 and Thursday, April 28. The workshop is sponsored by the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation.

The first workshop will include a 15-minute demonstration of what Found Sound instruments are, how they sound and how they are made. Students will then view the documentary “Found Sound” by David Zucker. Participants will then learn how to design their own instruments.

In the second workshop, students will create their unique musical instruments using reusable items from home, and write a description of their instruments, including how materials were chosen and how the instruments were made. The finished products and descriptions will be displayed at the Library in May. For more information, call (562) 916-1388.

Cerritos resident registration is currently under way, and non-resident registration starts on April 8 at 10 a.m. To register for the workshop, (registration #164905), visit www.cerritos.us and access the I Want To… section, or call the Library at (562) 916-1388.
