Run, Walk, and Ride: How to Get to the Beach this Summer

Cerritos and Artesia residents have several options to get their fun in the sun through alternative modes of transporation.

Going to the beach is a quintessential part of summer. However, crowded parking lots, the high costs of gas, unpredictable traffic, and expensive parking fees can make a trip to the beach a big pain in the beach-bum.

But Cerritos and Artesia residents have several options to get their dose of fun in the sun this season through alternative modes of transportation.

Car Cruisin
Though driving to the beach may sound like a good idea, it can be costly in more ways than one. For example, a trip to the Seal Beach Pier should take about 20 minutes from Cerritos. However, this time does not take into account traffic or time spent searching for parking -- both of which can become their own horiffic ordeals, especially during  the busy summer season.

You can save money, gas, and your carbon footprint by biking or taking public transportation to get  to the beach. These alternative modes of transportation also promote more physical activity (great  for toning your beach body) and social interaction with new and interesting people.

Take a Spin on a Bike
Cerritos and Artesia residents are very fortunate to have such easy access to the San Gabriel River Trail, which leads straight to the beach. After a nice, one hour bike ride, residents can find themselves at the beautiful and scenic Seal Beach Pier.

The San Gabriel River Trail itself is a pleasure to ride along. People will pass various wild plants and animals that call the river home, plus recreational sites such as El Dorado Park. This trip is a great opportunity to involve a group of friends or family members in healthy, outdoor activities. Just don't  forget to bring plenty of water, high-SPF sunblock, and bike-repair tools.

Jump on Public Transit
The same trip to Seal Beach would take between one hour to one and a half hours, depending on what date and time you depart when using public transportation. The bus  fair on this trip would cost about $2.75, versus the $6.88 (approximately) you would pay in gas, plus the cost of parking. Also, don't forget the mental cost and stress of finding a parking space during the busy summer days.

The L.A. Metro website provides helpful information on everything from buses and rails to road construction and closures. The Trip Planner is an easy-to-use guide to get you where you want to go. It can help you customize your travels, provide detailed instructions, and tell you exactly how much your trip will cost.
