Golf Tourney to Benefit Child Abuse Services

In 2011, there were 167,723 child abuse and neglect cases reported in Los Angeles County--about 25,000 confirmed--and nearly one-third of those involved children age 5 and under, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Children & Family Services.

Child abuse can cause life-long emotional damage, low self-esteem, aggression, depression, developmental problems and post-traumatic stress disorder in children. In later years, it can lead to a higher risk of drug and alcohol abuse, juvenile delinquency, teen pregnancy and how they live and function as adults and parents.

During Child Abuse Prevention Month in April, the Community Family Guidance Center, a local non-profit organization that has been providing child abuse and mental health services in LA County for more than 35 years, has been raising awareness of child abuse and neglect. To that end, they will be hosting the 22nd Annual Golf Classic on Monday, May 21, at the Rio Hondo Golf Club in Downey to raise funds for the cause.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the center's "Campaign to Prevent Child Abuse" program as well as the child abuse services it provides.

Tee time is noon.

"By addressing child abuse at every state of the cycle, we aim to help those who have already been abused and prevent further abuse," said Richard Murase, executive director of the center. "As an organization with years of experience in child abuse prevention, education, and treatment, we are well placed to make this a reality with the support of the community."
