Stock Up Now, Fees for Birth and Death Records to Increase $2 Starting on Jan. 1

Now is the time to pick up extra copies of birth and death records at the Registrar-County Clerk's office in Norwalk before the $2 fee hike starts on Jan. 1.

Fees charged for copies of birth and death records will go up by $2 annually for the next three years, the Los Angeles County Clerk announced today.

The first increase will take effect Jan. 1, bringing the cost of certified copies of birth records to $21 and death records to $14. Fees will go up by $2 more on Jan. 1 of 2013 and 2014.

Counties will keep 85 percent of the increase and the rest will go to state coffers. The extra charge is the result of an Assembly bill signed by Gov. Jerry Brown on Oct. 7 authorizing a $6.00 fee increase for certified copies, according to the county clerk.
