AT&T Vehicles Go Green in Cerritos

The communications giant now operates 8 alternative fuel vehicles in the Cerritos area.

AT&T's primary colors may be blue and orange but recently, one of the country's largest communications companies turned another color at its operations in Cerritos -- Green.

As part of a 10-year, $565 million commitment to deploy approximately 15,000 clean air vehicles across the country, AT&T now operates 8 alternative fuel vehicles in the Cerritos area including certified natural gas (CNS) vehicles.

AT&T says the alternative fuel vehicles are being used in Cerritos by technicians who install wireline and wireless services such as U-Verse television, voice, and internet products.

"Given the amount of time I'm out on the road...and the distances we drive in Southern California, I feel better driving an alternative-fuel vehicle - confident we are doing our part to support cleaner air," said Todd Merriss, an AT&T U-verse technician in Southern California.

California now holds the majority of AT&T's alternative fuel vehicles with 2,476 of the 5,000 vehicles located in the state.  According to a company press release, in the greater Los Angeles area alone, 1,419 of the vehicles have been deployed.

"In a short period of time... we’ve invested in the deployment of thousands of advanced technology vehicles that promote cleaner air, use less fuel and help AT&T lower its operating costs,” explained Jerome Webber, vice president of AT&T's Global Fleet Operations.

The result, if recent research proves correct, should have an impact on emissions and energy usage in the country.

According to a 2009 report by the Center for Automotive Research, AT&T's efforts will help save 49 million gallons of gasoline over a ten-year period and the reduced carbon emissions will be the equivalent of removing 38,600 cars from the road for one year.

“While some may see just another car or truck on the road, we think these vehicles represent the shared values of the communities where we live, work and play," said Webber.
