A well-attended field of golfers enjoyed a complimentary putting competition and then hit the links for a day of golf.

The annual Helicopter Ball Drop, sponsored by Merrill Lynch, at the beginning of the awards dinner drew a crowd to see who will have the winning ball dropped in the hole. This year had one winner, SMCDA, who donated the winnings back for scholarship. Los Cerritos Center Senior Marketing Manager Megan Richardson served as auctioneer for the live auction and promptly raised $3,800.

The Foundation presented Cerritos College students Lily Carnejo and Kayla Klein the 2013 Nancy Kelly Academic Scholarship, awarded each year to outstanding female athletes in softball who displays high academic achievement.

Cornejo began playing softball when she was six years old. She transferred to St. Katherine College in San Diego this fall and plays softball while pursuing her bachelor's degree in education with a goal of becoming a teacher.

Klein attended Texas A&M on a full-ride softball scholarship; however she had to stop playing due to an injury. Thinking her pitching career was over, she returned home and enrolled at Cerritos College. Klein credits Coach Kodee Murray for helping her return to pitching and complete educational goals. She transferred to Hope International University in Fullerton on a partial softball scholarship and plans on becoming a high school English teacher.

The 29th Annual Cerritos College Foundation Golf Classic is scheduled for August 4, 2014 at Friendly Hills Country Club.
