LA Archdiocese Collecting Donations to Aid the Philippines

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has set up donation drop boxes at 10 parishes as part of their effort to provide relief to areas in the Philippines devastated by a typhoon.

Items being accepted include clothing, meals, ready-to-eat foods such as Power bars, Clif bars and Ensure, blankets and toiletries.

The items will be shipped Nov. 29 from the Port of Los Angeles to the Philippines, Clark said.

The following parishes are confirmed drop-off locations for relief goods and donations:

• St. Anthony Catholic Church, 215 Lomita St., El Segundo
• Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 23233 Lyons Ave., Newhall
• St. Madeleine Church, 931 E. Kingsley Ave., Pomona
• St. Anthony Catholic Church, 600 Olive Ave., Long Beach
• St. Philomena Church, 21900 S. Main St., Carson
• Holy Family Church, 18708 Clarkdale Ave., Artesia
• St. Genevieve Church, 14061 Roscoe Blvd., Panorama City
• St. Lorenzo Ruiz Church, 747 Meadow Pass Rd., Walnut
• Sacred Heart Church, 2889 N. Lincoln Ave., Altadena
• Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 4950 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles

For those of you able to travel, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles will dedicate today's mid-morning Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles to the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.

The 10 a.m. Mass is an opportunity for people to come together to offer prayers and support for the victims of the typhoon, Bishop Edward Clark said.

A second collection will be taken during the Mass to assist Catholic Relief Services in providing emergency aid in the Philippines, Clark said.

Catholic Relief Services is the official international humanitarian agency of the Catholic community in the United State.

Students will be asked to donate $1. Schools are being invited "to select one day through Friday to gather in the classroom, school yard or auditorium in prayer for the children and their families in the Philippines," said Kevin Baxter, the archdiocese's superintendent of elementary schools.

Donations can also by made by Nov. 29 with a check payable to "Missionary Childhood Association -- Philippines Fund" and mailed to Missionary Childhood Association, Attn: Msgr. Terrance Fleming, 3424 Wilshire Blvd, Third Flood, Los Angeles, CA 90010.

All funds raised will be wired to the Philippines on Dec. 5, Baxter said.
