Carter, Mounties Too Much for Falcons in 74-57 Defeat

Cerritos women's basketball team faces its arch nemisis for the second year in a row for the Fullerton College tournament championship. Mt. SAC defeated Cerritos last year 61-58 to win the tournament

FULLERTON –The Cerritos College women’s basketball team made its second straight championship game of the Fullerton College Holiday Tournament Saturday afternoon.  For the second year in a row they had to face their arch nemesis Mt San Antonio College.  And for the second year in a row it was the Mounties who outlasted the Falcons 74-57 to claim the championship.

Angel Pena led the way for the Falcons, going for 19 points, two steals and two assists en route to an all-tournament selection.   Deenesha Bee Joined Pena on the all-tournament team with 13 points, two rebounds and a steal, while Diamond Roberts tallied nine points in the losing effort.

Mt. SAC took a brief lead when Shawlina Segovia made one of two free throws to take a 1-0 lead.  Cerritos then went on a 4-0 run before Ashley Burchfield put an end to it with a pass from Carter for an easy layup.   Neither team could get any significant run going. Mt SAC however went on a 7-4 run to take the 38-26 lead and momentum into halftime.

Ashley Carter led three Mounties in double figures, garnering her the tournament’s MVP.   Carter had 16 points, a rebound and two assists.  Burchfield added 12 points, seven rebounds, while Mason Morgan pitched in 14 points, four rebounds and a steal.  Jourdan Cooper was also named all-tournament with her nine points, four rebound performance.

Bee opened the second half with a quick 3-pointer, but then Mt. SAC went on an 18-2 run to take a commanding 56-33 lead.

Cerritos, however, would not go away, as they were able to go on a 10-3 run of its own to close the gap to 65-50 but they would get no closer as Mt. SAC pulled away to seal the victory.

“They’re a very good team,” Mounties head coach Brian Crichlow said, “but we were able to wear them down in the second half by running our plays and getting good results.”

Cerritos (7-7, 1-2) travels to El Camino College Friday for a Conference matchup.  Tipoff is at 6pm.
