Woman Identified in Deadly Hawaiian Gardens Fire

The Coroner's Office Sunday identified the woman who was found dead in an apartment building in Hawaiian Gardens.

She was identified as Sherry Carney, 56, said Coroner's Investigator Dana Bee.

Crews were dispatched at 11:20 p.m. Friday to the 12000 block of Tilbury Street, said Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Tony Akins.

Carney had been pulled out of the two-story building prior to the arrival of firefighters and was pronounced dead at the scene, Akins said.

Family members told a news photographer at the scene that Carney was found inside an apartment by her son.

The cause of her death would be determined by the Los Angeles County coroner's office, officials said.

About 30 firefighters responded and had the fire under control by 11:33 p.m. Friday, Akins said.
