Has your sweet tooth been getting the better of you lately? With springtime in full bloom and swimsuit season just around the corner, everyone is looking for ways to get healthy and fit.
Learn how to shake off that pre-summer sugar binge and detoxify your body with a little help and tips from local Ayurvedic practitioner and yoga instructor, Arezo Tehranirad:
Springtime is nature’s season of detoxification. As the warmth of the sun intensifies, it begins to liberate accumulations of sugars, fats, and toxins that our body was holding onto during the winter time in order to stay warm. In the Springtime, the blood gets invigorated by the sun and begins to release that which no longer serves use.
In Ayurveda, it is believed that an element of disease prevention involves living in harmony with the seasons. Generally speaking, it is recommended to incorporate more astringent, pungent, and bitter tasting foods to help assist in the flushing of the system that naturally goes on during Spring time.
It is recommended to avoid ingesting things that lead to further accumulation, which would be going against the natural flow of the Spring time detox.
Here are some dietary suggestions to help you take your health into your own hands:
Grains: barley, aged rice, spelt, millet, rye
Fruits: apples, pears, grapes, sweet oranges, dates, figs, melons, sweet mango, pomegranate
Vegetables: carrots, broccoli, kale, asparagus, cabbage, radish, onions, celery, bokchoy, beets, seaweed, zucchini, green beans, unsalted olives, squash, okra, yams, sweetpotatoes
