Authorities Say Phony Fire Inspectors Are Targeting Local Businesses

Local businesses should be on the lookout for criminals posing as fire inspectors -- a problem that is occurring in Los Angeles County and around the state.

Authorities today issued a warning that criminals are posing as fire inspectors and targeting businesses around Los Angeles County, a scam that is occurring in other jurisdictions around the state.

The bogus "inspectors'' claim to be inspecting fire extinguishers, smoke alarms or sprinkle systems, then trick employees into signing documents that are used to bill the business owner, Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley said.

Cooley noted that local fire departments conduct such inspections, and they don't charge fees.
