Cerritos Crime Recap: July 1 to 7

Editor's Note: The information below comes from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Cerritos Station's weekly crime summary.

Cerritos Sheriffs Station logged 20 Part I felony investigations last week, down from the 26 the week before. Commercial burglaries and vehicle burglaries increased, robberies remained the same, while residential burglaries and vehicle thefts declined. There were 364 calls for service handled by patrol deputies. 384 were assigned the previous reporting period. The 2013 weekly average in calls for service is now 303.

ROBBERIES

For the second consecutive week there were no robberies reported. 

RESIDENTIAL BURGLARIES

Residential burglaries dropped from seven to three last week with two more attempted. Three suspects are in custody in one of the attempted crimes. Two homes were entered via an open and an unlocked door. One window was shattered. A bicycle and jewelry were the reported losses. The 2013 weekly average in residential burglaries is currently 5.0.

COMMERCIAL/OTHER STRUCTURE BURGLARIES 

“Other structure”/commercial burglaries rose from one to four last week. Two closed business were involved where copper wire was stolen. Tools were taken from a storage shed and five suspects were arrested after prying a detached garage door to gain entry. The 2013 weekly average in “other structure”/commercial burglaries is 2.9. 

VEHICLE BURGLARIES 

Vehicle burglaries increased from four to five last week. Only one of the recent cases occurred in a high-volume commercial parking lot. Four of the vehicles were SUVs. Suspects were in custody in three of the crimes. A guitar, a backpack and a laptop were taken. Suitcases and third-row seats (from SUVs) were recovered in the cases where the arrests were made. The new 2013 weekly average in vehicle burglaries is 7.3.

VEHICLE THEFTS

Vehicle thefts were down from seven to three last week. All three were Honda products and were taken from high volume commercial parking lots. The 2013 weekly average in vehicle thefts is now 3.8.

Volunteers on Patrol Wanted

The Cerritos Sheriff’s Station is seeking Volunteers on Patrol (VOPs). Patrolling the city in distinctly marked vehicles, VOPs assist with crime suppression, traffic control, vacation checks, special events and park security checks. They serve as additional “eyes and ears” for the Sheriff’s Department and train as first responders in the event of a major emergency or disaster. If you are interested in helping Cerritos maintain its reputation as a safe place to live and work, the Cerritos Sheriff’s Station encourages you to apply to be a VOP.
