Cerritos Crime Recap: June 3 to 9

Editor's Note: The information below comes from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Cerritos Station's weekly crime summary.

Part I felony investigations conducted by members of the Cerritos Sheriff’s Station dropped from 33 the previous reporting period to 21 last week. Robberies and vehicle burglaries remained the same while decreases were noted in residential burglaries, commercial burglaries and vehicle thefts. Cerritos patrol deputies responded to 304 calls for service, down from 331 the week before. The current 2013 weekly average in calls for service is 295.

ROBBERIES

One robbery was logged on Monday, June 3 at 9:40 a.m. when a man confronted a male maintenance worker with a knife near Questa Drive and Sierra Vista Way and robbed him of more than 200 laundry coin box keys.

RESIDENTIAL BURGLARIES

Residential burglaries dropped from 11 the week before to four. Two were the result of open/unlocked doors or windows, one home had a pried garage door and the fourth had a shattered sliding glass door. Laptop computers, cash and jewelry were taken. The 2013 weekly average in residential burglaries remained at 5.3.

COMMERCIAL/OTHER STRUCTURE BURGLARIES

“Other structure”/commercial burglaries also dropped from four to three last week. A school office had a shattered window but no loss could be determined. A fitness center locker was targeted after the lock was removed and resulted in the theft of a wallet and cell phone. Copper wire was stolen from a vacant building after a door was pried open. The 2013 weekly average in “other structure”/commercial burglaries is 3.0.

VEHICLE BURGLARIES

Vehicle burglaries remained the same at six. High-volume commercial parking lots were involved in only three. Five of the vehicles were SUVs and one was a commercial trailer. Purses, wallets, debit cards and a bag were missing. The new 2013 weekly average in vehicle burglaries is 7.8.

VEHICLE THEFTS

There were no reported vehicle thefts last week. The 2013 weekly average in this category is now 3.8.

Volunteers on Patrol Wanted 

The Cerritos Sheriff’s Station is seeking Volunteers on Patrol (VOPs). Patrolling the city in distinctly marked vehicles, VOPs assist with crime suppression, traffic control, vacation checks, special events and park security checks. They serve as additional “eyes and ears” for the Sheriff’s Department and train as first responders in the event of a major emergency or disaster. If you are interested in helping Cerritos maintain its reputation as a safe place to live and work, the Cerritos Sheriff’s Station encourages you to apply to be a VOP.
