National Night Out is an annual campaign celebrated by community members in more than 43 neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles County as well as thousands of communities nationwide. This event, which in most neighborhoods is being celebrated on Aug. 2, is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch and co-sponsored locally by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

According to the campaign's website, the event is designed to:

  • Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
  • Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs;
  • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
  • Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
