Cerritos Weekly Crime Recap: Feb. 21 - Feb. 28

Crime took a plunge in the city during this period with the exception of commercial burglaries and robberies.

Editor's Note: The information below comes from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Cerritos Station's weekly crime summary. 

The logged 15 Part I felony investigations during this period, down from 15 the week before. All categories of crime declined with the exception of robberies and commercial burglaries. There were 205 calls for service, down from 251 the week before. The new 2011 weekly average in calls for service is 252. 

ROBBERIES

One attempted robbery was reported during this period when a male victim was accosted by a lone male suspect at 10 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 24 in the 12200 block of Stillwater Lane. The suspect was carrying a knife, and after a brief struggle, he fled without any of the victim’s property.

RESIDENTIAL BURGLARIES

There were no residential burglaries reported during this period. The new 2011 weekly average in residential burglaries is 3.8.

COMMERCIAL/OTHER STRUCTURE BURGLARIES

Five commercial burglaries were reported compared to one the week before. The cases last week involved four closed businesses and a school. Laptop computers and batteries were taken by the burlgars. The 2011 weekly average in “other structure”/commercial burglaries is now 3.4.

VEHICLE BURGLARIES

There were no vehicle burglaries investigated during this week. The new 2011 weekly average in vehicle burglaries is 5.8.

VEHICLE THEFTS

Vehicle thefts dropped from four to two during this period. The incidents involved an SUV and a Toyota -- both in high-volume commercial parking lots. The 2011 weekly average in vehicle thefts is now 2.3.

Sheriff's safety tip: Even though we see more SUV, Hondas and Toyotas stolen compared to others, car thieves are not always as selective as you think and are often just looking for transportation. Consider a steering wheel locking device that serves as a good visual deterrent.
