Sheriff's safety tip: Two garage doors were open last week leading to the loss of personal property to thieves. If you leave your garage door open, make sure that you are in the garage, front yard, or near it to monitor.  It only takes seconds to remove an item, so constant vigilence will be necessary.

COMMERCIAL/OTHER STRUCTURE BURGLARIES

Two commercial burglaries were reported during this period, a sharp decline from the seven recorded the previous week. A door was pried open at a vacant building where copper wire was removed, and a fitness center locker had a lock cut where a wallet, keys, and shorts were taken. The 2011 weekly average in commercial /“other structure” burglaries is 3.1.

VEHICLE BURGLARIES

Vehicle burglaries dropped from eleven to six last week. Five of the crimes last week occurred in high-volume commercial parking lots, and five involved SUVs. Third-row seats (from SUVs), suitcases, wallets, clothing, credit cards, sunglasses, and video games were stolen. The new 2011 weekly average in vehicle burglaries is 5.9.

Sheriff's safety tip: Residents are urged to avoid leaving windows open or even “cracked” while attempting to cool an unattended vehicle. Thieves see this as a means to enter your vehicle without breaking any glass that could attract the attention of witnesses.

VEHICLE THEFTS

Five vehicle thefts were investigated, all from high-volume commercial parking lots. One SUV, a Honda, a trailer, a golfcart, and a tractor were missing. Four vehicle thefts were reported the previous week. The 2011 weekly average in this crime is now 2.8.

Sheriff's safety tip: We always promote the use of steering wheel locking devices as great visible deterrents, but also endorse the use of tracking devices that can lead to the speedy recovery of your stolen vehicle.
