Cerritos Weekly Crime Recap: Oct. 31 to Nov. 6

The Cerritos Sheriff's Station/Community Safety Center tells residents that the number one way to protect a home from burglary is to have an alarm system installed, which initiates a law enforcement response within minutes.

Editor's Note: The information below comes from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Cerritos Station's weekly crime summary.

personnel investigated 22 Part I felony crimes, a declined from the 33 cases recorded the previous week. Robberies, residential and commercial burglaries, and vehicle thefts were down, but an increase was shown in vehicle burglaries. Patrol deputies handled 258 calls for service last week, down from 266 the week before. The current 2011 weekly average in calls for service is 272.

Six residential burglaries were investigated during this period, down from eight the previous week. Five of the cases involved open or unlocked doors or windows, and one window was pried open. Jewelry, laptop computers, cash, liquor, suitcases, and cameras were taken. The 2011 weekly average in residential burglaries is 4.0

Sheriff's note: The Cerritos Sheriff’s Station/Community Safety Center receives frequent inquiries from new and established residents as to the best methods to protect a home from burglary. Our number one recommendation is to have an alarm system installed. These systems are a proven deterrent and initiate a law enforcement response within minutes.

COMMERCIAL/OTHER STRUCTURE BURGLARIES

Commercial burglaries dropped from four to one last week. A closed business was targeted where a front door was pried and a TV stolen. The 2011 weekly average in commercial/“other structure” burglaries is 2.9.

VEHICLE BURGLARIES

Vehicle burglaries were up from six to eleven last week. High-volume commercial parking lots were the crime scenes in seven of the cases. Six SUVs were involved. Three GPS, cell phones, sunglasses, MP3 players, laptop computers, and third-row seats (from an SUV) were reported stolen. The 2011 weekly average in vehicle burglaries remained at 6.7.

Sheriff's safety tip: Don’t give a criminal the chance to deprive you of your property. If you absolutely must leave items in your car, make sure that they are locked up in the trunk.

VEHICLE THEFTS

Vehicle thefts were down from nine to two last week. One theft occurred in a high-volume commercial parking lot, and the other in a residential neighborhood. Both vehicles stolen were SUVs. The 2011 weekly average in vehicle thefts is now 3.1.

Sheriff's safety tip: We always promote the use of steering wheel locking devices as great visible deterrents, but also endorse the use of tracking devices that can lead to the speedy recovery of your stolen vehicle.
