If You Talk-Text, Eat, Read or Apply Makeup While Driving, the CHP Will Be Watching You
The CHP is having a "zero tolerance" cellphone enforcement from 6 a.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Saturday; officers will also be cracking down on drivers who eat, read or apply makeup while behind the wheel.
The California Highway Patrol will be cracking down on distracted drivers for a 24-hour period starting today, targeting motorists who are illegally talking or texting on their cellphones, but also those who are eating, reading or putting on makeup while behind the wheel.
The "zero tolerance" period will start at 6 a.m. on Dec. 30 and last until 6 a.m. on New Year's Eve, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Being a distracted driver is in violation of the California vehicle code, which states that a driver can be ticketed $145 to $1,000 for disregarding the safety of persons or property, the newspaper reported.

Motorists who are caught talking or texting on their celllphones while operating a vehicle face the following fines:
- $20 for the first offense (plus court costs)
- $50 for the second (plus court costs)
