Two males suspected of trying to break into an Artesia home Friday afternoon were taken into custody by sheriff's deputies thanks to an alert neighbor who spotted the pair in the backyard of a neighbor's residence in an upscale residential neighborhood along the Cerritos and Artesia border near Los Cerritos Center.

Units from both the Cerritos and Lakewood sheriff's stations swarmed Summer Avenue, located near 183rd Street and Gridley Road, at about 1 p.m. Friday, according to a lieutenant with the Lakewood Sheriff's Station, which patrols the city of Artesia. A sheriff's helicopter unit was also seen hovering above the area, according to witness reports.

"A neighbor saw the two males -- one juvenile, one adult -- in another neighbor's backyard and called us," the lieutenant said. "And fortunately, we were able to get there in time and prevent them from breaking into the house."

The pair was taken into custody with "tools" on their person, she added, but declined to go into detail as to what evidence was collected, stating only that the case remained under investigation.

LASD: Neighborhood Watch Does Work

"This proves 'Neighborhood Watch' does work," the lieutenant said, further emphasizing the importance of alerting authorities when you see something out of the ordinary.

"If you see anybody suspicious in your neighborhood or a car in your area that you've never seen before -- please give the sheriff's station a call. A phone call is all it takes," she added.
