UPDATED: Man Shot and Killed in Officer-Involved Shooting in Downey

A man was shot and killed by a Downey police officer in nearby Downey about 7 p.m. tonight.

*Updated at 11 p.m.: The Sheriff's Department now says the male suspect was killed in an officer-involved shooting.

A man was fatally shot in an officer-involved shooting in Downey tonight, authorities said.

The shooting at Firestone Boulevard and Old River School Road occurred about 6:50 p.m., said Deputy Mark Pope of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.

The wounded suspect, whose name was withheld pending notification of next of kin, was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead, Pope said.

Sheriff's homicide detectives were sent to help Downey police investigate the shooting, Pope said.
