Man Takes His Own Life in CHP Station Parking Lot

A CHP officer discovered the man's body the front parking lot.

A man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the parking lot of the  California Highway Patrol's Santa Fe Springs station today.

Lt. Steve Dean of the Whittier Police Department, which patrols Santa Fe Springs, said the incident was reported by a CHP officer at 3:47 a.m. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene 10 minutes later.

That office serves the communities of Cerritos, Artesia, South Gate and Lynwood, according to CHP online records.

"At this point it looks like a suicide," Dean said. "He apparently shot himself in the front parking lot."

Dean said there were no witnesses to the shooting, which occurred in the 10,000 block of Orr and Day Road in Santa Fe Springs.

Dean said the victim could not immediately be identified.
