Police Arrest Torrance Man in Connection to Cerritos Car Crash

The hit and run suspect was stopped and arrested in Buena Park.

La Palma and Buena Park police arrested a man they suspect of fleeing the scene of a Cerritos crash that took place late Thursday night.

Officials believe Alfonso Delgado, 45, of Torrance was driving a pickup that rear-ended an SUV, causing the SUV's 58-year old driver to hit and sheer off a fire hydrant, according to a report by the Orange County Register. The accident, the Register reported, caused the man and his passengers, his mother and son, to be taken to a hospital.

One of the reasons may have identified Delgado's truck as the one that allegedly hit the SUV is that his pick up's engine bay and cab had flames coming from it by the time it arrived at Orangethorpe Avenue and Indiana Street in Buena Park, reported NBC Southern California.

"When he collided, his engine caught on fire and it started smoking slowly at the scene of the collision," Cerritos Sheriff's Station Sgt. Rick Vargas told camera crews at the scene.

Delgado was arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run and driving under the influence and was taken to a hospital for minor injuries, the OC Register said.
