Public safety officials urged Southland residents today to leave fireworks to the pros and attend a public display on the Fourth of July.

In some cases, setting off fireworks in Los Angeles County be prosecuted as a felony, sheriff's Detective Enrique Velazquez of the explosives detail said at a multi-agency news conference.

"If you are caught, it can be a felony and you'll spend your Fourth of July behind bars," Velazquez said.

"We've had fingers blown off, people damage their eyes, burns. It's very dangerous," he said.

In some Los Angeles County cities, safe and sane fireworks, such as sparklers, are permitted. But any fireworks that explode or fly are illegal. Those approved by the state fire marshal carry "Safe and Sane" labels.

I wish LAPD and LAFD could crack down on those who set off fireworks in Los Angeles. It has started already. The other night I was driving home and someone set off a rocket of the type you see at the Rose Bowl. I no longer go anywhere on the 4th of July. Too dangerous with all the people setting off major rockets, etc. in the streets. I also like to be at home in case someone starts a fire with fireworks here on Mt. Washington. As I understand it, ALL fireworks are illegal in the City of Los Angeles. No "safe and sane" stuff allowed.

I'm with you, JMarsh! I too wish that they crack down on these horrific crimes that don't do any damage. I spent the Fourth of July in Los Angeles last year, and saw countless rockets, and heard numerous firecrackers. I pulled over to listen for the sirens of fire departments rushing to put out fires, and ambulances tending to the injured and dying. And guess what!? No sirens. So I traveled a little more, pulled over again, and heard more of the same, no sirens. So the next day, I picked up the paper to see how the government would dispose of the countless bodies of the victims of this horrible holiday, and guess what!? Nothing. WE NEED TO WORK TOGETHER TO BAN THE FOURTH, AND ALL OTHER AMERICAN HOLIDAYS!

Why are safe and sane fireworks not allowed? I understand not allowing fireworks that explode in the sky but outlawing safe fireworks is wrong. Government overstepping its duties.

Some people just feel good when the government controls every aspect if their life

Why banning the Fourth and all American holidays? What's left to look forward to?
