UPDATED: Sheriff's Deputies Shoot Reckless DUI Driver at End of Pursuit in Cerritos

A reckless motorist who was allegedly driving under the influence was shot and wounded by a Lakewood Sheriff's Station deputies at the end of a pursuit in Cerritos Sunday night, authorities said.

The shooting took place near Judy Way and Cuesta Drive about 7:30 p.m. Feb. 26, said Deputy Tony Moore of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau. The shooting appears to have occurred in a residential area close to the office and the .

Moore said at least one sheriff's deputy shot and wounded the male suspect, who was described as a Hispanic man.

"It was at the end of a reckless driver pursuit -- a DUI suspect,'' Moore said, adding that it was unclear whether the suspect fired at the deputies.

The suspect was taken to a hospital, where he is listed in stable condition, according to the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau. No deputies were hit, Moore added.

Details on what triggered the chase were not immediately released.

The roadways into the residential area from Cuesta Drive and along 166th Street were blocked for several hours as sheriff's personnel conducted their investigation, leaving many residents without access to their homes until just before midnight.
