UPDATED: Suspect Critically Wounded in Exchange of Gunfire With Deputies in Bellflower

A suspect was wounded in a deputy-involved shooting in Bellflower about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

A male suspected of looking inside of vehicles was shot by sheriff's deputies after authorities said he crouched down, got a gun out of his waistband and shot at the deputies today in Bellflower.

The exchange of gunfire took place at in the 8800 block of Oak Street about 4:30 p.m., said Deputy Lillian Peck of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.

Deputies from the sheriff's Lakewood Station, which services the city of Bellflower, saw a man matching the description of the person looking inside vehicles and tried to contact him.

He ran and was pursued by one deputy on foot and another in a patrol
car. After a short distance, the suspect crouched down, got a gun out of his
waistband and shot at the deputies, but missed them.

The deputies returned fire, striking the suspect several times. The male, whose name was not released, was hospitalized in critical condition.

The suspect's revolver was recovered at the scene.

No deputies were hit in the gunbattle, according to the sheriff's department.
