Super Bowl Sunday a Super Day for DUI Arrests

The numbers add up to 177 across the many police agencies across Los Angeles County.

Law enforcement officers in Los Angeles County arrested 177 people on Super Bowl Sunday on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, authorities said today.

The arrests were made from 12:01 a.m. Sunday through midnight, said Wendy Brewer of the Avoid the 100 Los Angeles County DUI Campaign. The arrest figures are preliminary.

The campaign included sobriety checkpoints, special “saturation patrols” deploying additional officers to certain areas, and routine patrols around the county, Brewer said.

Other “Avoid the 100” enforcement efforts are planned for St. Patrick's Day, Cinco de Mayo, and the Memorial Day weekend, Brewer said.

Funding for the program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
