UPDATED: Deputy-Involved Shooting in Hawaiian Gardens Leaves Two Wounded

Gunfire broke out in nearby Hawaiian Gardens just before 3:30 p.m., leaving two suspects wounded.

Two suspects were wounded in a confrontation with sheriff's deputies with a narcotics unit and a police officer from La Verne in Hawaiian Gardens today.

The shooting at Horst Avenue and 216th Street occurred about 3:25 p.m., said Deputy Benjamin Grubb of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.

The two suspects were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening wounds, and no law enforcement personnel was hurt, according to sheriff's Lt. John Hocking. 

Hocking says it was not clear what triggered the confrontation, but the deputies are with a narcotics unit that is a multi-agency task force. An apparently related car crash was also reported a short distance away.

Residents and motorists in the area told Patch that the neighborhood around the site of the shooting was cordoned for several hours following the incident.

The community of Hawaiian Gardens, like the city of Artesia, is served by the Lakewood Sheriff's Station. Deputies from the Lakewood Station were involved in , when a suspected drunken driver led them on a pursuit near Judy Way and Cuesta Drive in Cerritos about 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 26. Deputies shot the male suspect "at the end of a reckless driver pursuit." He was expected to survive and the case remains under investigation, according to the Sheriff's Department.

When a deputy-involved shooting occurs, multiple investigations immediately begin at the scene of the shooting.
