WATCH: Tear Gas Used to Draw Suspected Car Thief Out of Lakewood Home

Sheriff's deputies were in pursuit of the suspect when he ditched the stolen vehicle and ran into the abandoned residence.

A stolen car suspect being pursued by Lakewood Sheriff's deputies ditched the older-model Honda and barricaded himself inside the attic of an abandoned Lakewood home today, and exited only after tear gas was lobbed into the residence.

Deputies spotted the suspect driving the stolen car near Lakewood and Del Amo boulevards about 3:15 p.m. Jan. 24 and gave chase, said Sgt. Daniel Gillespie of the Lakewood Sheriff's Station.

The man abandoned the car nearby and ran into a home, which was apparently unoccupied, at 4903 Fidler Ave., the sergeant said.

Deputies used dogs and tear gas to flush out the man, who emerged shirtless from the home's attic vent -- almost losing his trousers in the process of squeezing through the small opening. He was quickly taken into custody.

The suspect's name was not immediately released.
