An off-duty sheriff's sergeant shot and wounded two men in the Greenbook neighborhood of Cerritos late Wednesday night shortly after he allegedly caught the pair and a third man breaking into his home, which was tented for fumigation.
The shooting in the 12900 block of Glenda Street near Alatha Street was reported at 10:51 p.m. Wednesday, according to Deputy Benjamin Grubb of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Headquarters Bureau.
The sergeant's residence on Glenda Street had been tented for fumigation, but when he entered the backyard, he "was confronted by three men who were exiting his residence,'' sheriff's Deputy Peter Gomez said in a statement.
"The sergeant ordered the suspects to stop and raise their hands, and a physical altercation ensued, resulting in a deputy-involved shooting,'' Gomez said, adding that the sergeant suffered minor injuries in the scuffle.
The pair of wounded suspects were transported from the scene by ambulance in critical condition. The third burglar fled, prompting deputies to quickly set up a containment.
Several units from the Sheriff's Department's , Norwalk, Lakewood and Paramount stations arrived at the scene following the shooting and established a command post at the parking lot on the corner of Bloomfield Avenue and Artesia Boulevard. A sheriff's helicopter unit hovered over the residential area for more than 90 minutes while deputies assisted by canine units conducted an intense search for the third suspect, who remained at large as of daybreak.
A man named Andrew who lives in the Greenbrook community told Patch that his sister who was inside their home at the time of the shooting, heard at least five shots ring out before paramedics and sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene, drawing several curious residents out of their homes.
Andrew along with a handful of other residents who live in Greenbrook waited patiently outside of the cordoned off area for several hours before most of them eventually left and opted to stay at a hotel for the night.
