VIDEO: Suspected Drunken Driver Slams Head-On Into Pickup Truck Along Cerritos-Artesia Border

Both drivers were taken to a hospital following the crash; the wrong-way driver whose vehicle was left severely damaged appears to have been under the influence of alcohol.

A 49-year-old woman who appeared to have been under the influence of alcohol drove into oncoming traffic on Artesia Boulevard tonight and crashed into a pickup truck near Kennedy Elementary School along the Cerritos-Artesia border, injuring herself and the other driver.

The accident took place just before 6:40 p.m. on Artesia Boulevard between Bloomfield Avenue and Norwalk Boulevard, said  Sgt. Mark Patrick.

A man in a pickup was headed westbound on Artesia Boulevard when a woman in a black GMC Suburban traveling in the wrong direction slammed head-on into his vehicle, Deputy Tim Britt told Patch.

The wrong-way driver was taken to Long Beach Memorial Hospital, where she was being examined and treated, Patrick added.

"She displayed symptoms of being under the influence of alcohol," Sgt. Rick Vargas said, adding that the results of her blood test were pending. The woman is not a Cerritos or Artesia resident, Vargas said.

The 77-year-old man in the pickup was taken to UC Irvine Medical Center with minor injuries, he said.

Video and photos taken shortly after the wreck show that the Suburban sustained major front end damage, while the pickup had most of its damage to the right front end. (See image carousel for video and photos of the wreck.)

A portion of westbound Artesia Boulevard was shut down following the accident.
