Artesia Election Attracts Only Two Candidates; Canales and Lima To Be Appointed

The Artesia City Council will vote to cancel the scheduled November 8 election and appoint current City Council Member Tony Lima and Planning Commission Chair Miguel Canales for the two seats.

The Nov. 8 election for two seats in the Artesia City Council only attracted two candidates, City Clerk Gloria Considine told Patch.

Since no other competitors filed in time for last week's deadline, the City Council will meet this Wednesday, Aug. 24 to pass a resolution canceling the election and appointing the two candidates, incumbent Council Member Tony Lima and Planning Commission Chair Miguel Canales, to the seats.

Considine said this action will save Artesia $40,000. She added that it is the second time in a decade that the City Council is canceling an election.
