Assemblymember Cristina Garcia (D-Bell Gardens) announces that her office is actively encouraging high school students to become the leaders of tomorrow, by applying to become a Young Legislator, as part of her program in the 58th Assembly District.
The program, free of charge, provides students the opportunity to learn about the Legislative process, while integrating themselves within their local communities by participating in community service. Young Legislators will be able to learn about the process by which proposed bills become law. Participants will meet regularly to surface and discuss possible ideas for legislation and learn how to draft, submit and ultimately win approval for their proposals.
As the students proceed in the program, the Young Legislators will be given hands-on experience, working within their communities, as they participate in local events hosted by Assemblymember Garcia’s district office.
Young Legislators who successfully complete the program will travel to the State Capitol in Sacramento where they will coordinate with Assemblymember Garcia and her office to participate in bill development, mock committee hearings and a floor session in the State Assembly chambers.
“As an educator, I am inspired to educate and enrich the lives of students in our community,” Garcia said. “It is our goal to give deserving students who have the desire and dedication an opportunity to learn how to participate fully in their government. It is exciting to help young people improve their lives and their communities through this program. ”
To be eligible for the Young Legislators program, applicants must be incoming Seniors in high school and possess at least a 2.5 grade point average.
To apply, please use the Assemblymember’s website http://asmdc.org/members/a58/ and click the Young Legislators Application button on the homepage, or call (562) 402-4893 for more information.
