Cerritos College Host First-Ever Summit for Progressive Women Seeking to Run for Office

Last weekend, Women: Organized to Win hosted a very successful first-annual Women’s Summit for women aspiring to run for elected office in California.

Women from throughout the state joined by Congresswomen Linda Sanchez (CA-38) and Assemblymember Cristina Garcia (D-Bell Gardens) convened at Cerritos College on July 27 where summit attendees participated in educational workshops and networked with other women considering launching campaigns of their own.

“Women make up more than half of all registered voters, but only 18% of federally elected Representatives are women,” said Congresswoman Linda Sanchez, who encouraged summit attendees to run for office. “We need to elect more women because of what they bring to the job. Recently, Stanford and the University of Chicago did a study comparing female and male lawmakers. The conclusion of the study was clear: women are more effective legislators than men. They introduce more legislation which results in more resources for their district. The legislation women introduce receives greater support from their colleagues.”

The Women’s Summit provided future women candidates with a roadmap for a successful campaign and strategies for overcoming challenges of running for elected office. Attendees also participated in breakout sessions on a variety of campaign components including fundraising, community outreach, and voter identification.

“Right now, women are less like than men to think about politics as a career path and to receive encouragement to run for office,” said Assemblymember Cristina Garcia. “Women are often the backbone of families, neighborhoods, communities. My job and the job of everyone here is to work until they become the backbone of our policy-making institutions.”

Women: Organized to Win was launched earlier this year to help elect progressive women to the California State Assembly and Senate in 2014 and future elections. Currently, less than 30 percent of the elected California State Legislators are women. In California, women make up more than 50 percent of the state’s total population.

“We need more qualified and passionate women to run,” said Hermosa Beach City Council candidate Nanette Barragan who attended the Summit.  “The City of Hermosa Beach could use a woman’s perspective. Coming here today to meet with a network of passionate women who are also seeking to make positive change and influence in their communities was a great experience.”
