LA Weekly Feature: Assembly District 58 Results: City of Bell Activist Cristina Garcia Beats Entrenched Has-Been Tom Calderon

My work to form BASTA –the Bell Association to Stop the Abuse, a local advocacy organization came about when the residents of the city of Bell approached me for help. Our efforts forced out Bell’s corrupt officials and ushered in accountability and transparency for the first time in the city’s history. A new city council was elected and far-reaching reforms are now being implemented in Bell, giving citizens the good government they deserve. As an educator, I have taught Mathematics to local high students through the Jaime Escalante Program, served as a Math advocate in South LA, a tutor for elementary kids in Cudahy, and worked with the Los Angeles Community College District to help students pass the California High School Exit Exam and the GED. As I stated previously, I am ensuring full state funding for higher education and community colleges is a priority for me. Recently I have been recognized by California Forward with the distinguished California Forward Thinkers Award; in addition was awarded the Democrat of the Year award and received Distinguished Woman of the Year Honors from the State Assembly.
