Last month, Assemblymember Mendoza asked residents from his district to nominate a fellow community member who has worked hard to have a positive effect in the local community, exemplifies the work of Cesar Chavez and displays his 10 core values of acceptance of all people, sacrifice, determination, non-violence, service to others, respect for life and the environment, celebrating the community, knowledge, and innovation. After receiving a number of applications, Mateos was ultimately chosen to receive the award.

Her long list of contributions to the community includes volunteering for the Neighborhood Watch, Red Ribbon Week, National Night Out, and regularly attending city council meetings. She is also President of the Melbourne Elementary School PTA.
