A public memorial service will be held Sunday for Lakewood Councilman Larry Van Nostran, who died Friday at the age of 79 after serving on the council since 1975.
The service will begin at 2 p.m. in the Weingart Ballroom at The Centre at Sycamore Plaza at the Lakewood Civic Center.
A public visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Luyben Family Dilday-Mottell Mortuary in Long Beach.
Van Nostran was born in Ohio and moved to Lakewood in 1958, four years after dairy farms had been converted to a master-planned suburb and the city was incorporated. He was active in the Elks Club, Jaycees, Kiwanis, Pan American Association and Masonic Lodge & Scottish Rite.
Van Nostran was appointed to the city's Traffic and Safety Commission in 1971. He served nine one-year terms as mayor.
Van Nostran was president of the executive committee of the California Joint Powers Insurance Authority, the largest municipal self-insurance agency in the state, since 1990.
Van Nostran is survived by his wife, Charlene, sons Denis and David, five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Friends of the Lakewood Sheriff's Station at 5130 Clark Avenue, Lakewood, CA 90712, or to Christ Presbyterian Church of Lakewood at 5225 Hayter Avenue, Lakewood, CA 90712.
