Redistricting Maps Finalized By Citizens Commission

Possible primary battle between U.S. Reps. Linda Sanchez and Grace Napolitano looms as their residences are part of one district.

The 14-member Citizens Redistricting Commission certified the state's new legislative districts Monday as required every 10 years after the Census results are released.

Barring a potential initiative drive by Republicans to invalidate the new districts according to the Los Angeles Times after Monday's near-unanimous decision by the panel, the districts will be in place for next year's general election.

The final maps, released on July 29, will likely spell a battle for the new 38th congressional district, which includes Cerritos and Artesia. The cities' current United States Representative Linda Sanchez (D-Lakewood) is drawn in the same district as Rep. Grace Napolitano (D-Norwalk). Last week, State Senator Ron Calderon announced he will challenge Napolitano, making this a potential three-way battle.

In the State Legislature however, Cerritos and Artesia will be part of the 32nd State Senate district and the 58th State Assembly district. These districts are shifted northward around the cities of Whittier and Montebello as opposed to the current districts toward cities close to Long Beach.

New faces are likely to represent these districts as the current State Assemblyman for Cerritos and Artesia, Tony Mendoza (D-Artesia) is term-limited and because Calderon, the current State Senator representing many cities in the new district, is running for Congress.
