Plans to End Saturday Mail Delivery on Hold for Now

The USPS suspends plans to end Saturday mail delivery service because of a move by Congress.

The United States Postal Service board of governors announced Wednesday that it will delay plans to cease Saturday mail delivery.

Congress has prohibited implementation of a new national delivery schedule for mail and packages, according to a statement released by the board.

In February, the USPS announced that it would end regular mail delivery on Saturdays beginning early August.

The move came as a cost-cutting measure, as the Postal Service hoped to save $2 billion annually by cutting Saturday delivery service. According to reports, the USPS lost almost $16 billion last year.

In July 2011, the Postal Service announced that nearly 3,700 post offices across the country may close in an effort to save money. In January, it also increased stamp prices once again, from 45 cents to 46 cents, to mail one-ounce letters.
