In a world where American youth is often portrayed as apathetic teens, party-driven undergrads and Justin “Beliebers,” a couple wide-eyed adolescents managed to leave the nest in search for a different calling.
21-year-old Henna Sharma, a candidate for a four-year term in the Nov. 9 ABC School Board race, is at a point in her life when most people her age think “ABC” stands for Absolut, Bacardi and Courvoisie. But this young woman is different; she seeks to make a change.
On Oct. 1, Sharma, along with friends, family and supporters, gathered at Heritage Park where Sharma explained what she plans to accomplish during her campaign.
“I think right now, our main focus will be going door-to-door,” Sharma said. “It’s a completely grassroots campaign. I’m making sure we’re not hiring anybody, but people who actually want to get involved.”
Sharma has proven by her track record that she didn’t exactly heed the words of Homer Simpson, upon his return college, to “party down.” Working on President Obama’s 2012 campaign as well as working for , Henna is a prime poster-child for products of ABC – being a alumnus and all. But, is she … a child? Henna said she stands out from her older opposition because of her lack of prior obligations due to being such a young candidate.
“Right now, I’m the freest of all of them (other candidates) and that’s why I can take that extra step and doing some things that they might have wanted to do, but they didn’t necessarily have the time or the ability to do that, “Sharma said.
Former Cerritos City Council candidate, is proud of Sharma for running for the school board.
“I’m very proud a young kid is very into the politics,” Mody said. “I’m sure, with her attitude towards new ideas, it will bring a lot of changes to the school board.”
Sharma’s father, Shashi Kumar Sharma, finds it exciting that the younger generation is taking an interest in politics while giving back to the community.
“She’s (Henna) a local product,” Shashi said. “She knows how the system works."
