ABC School Board President Maynard Law Gives It Another Shot

ABC School Board President kicks off his campaign for re-election with a slew of friends and family to cheer him on.

After a year of unwanted hands dealt by the higher-ups in Sacramento as well as undergoing heart surgery, the leader of a school district’s starting line-up wants to do it all over again. With three incumbents by his side, he plans to help continue delivering world-class education. On Sept. 5, ABC School President Maynard Law launched his campaign for re-election.

Hosted by former Cerritos Mayor and ABC School Board President, Dr. Bob Hughlett, Law’s kick-off proved a boost in morale for a district that’s already sacrificed so much. Accompanied by his wife, Pat Law, Maynard was surrounded by friends and supporters like as Cerritos Mayor Carol Chen, councilmembers Bruce Barrows and Jim Edwards and even former Cerritos Mayor Pro Tem Laura Lee.

“He has obviously worked for four years with the various administrators, teachers and unions,” Pat said. “I think it gives him an advantage because he knows what needs to be done.”

Law grew up in Long Beach and attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School. Before that, he met his wife, now a retired registered nurse, in junior high school. Receiving his teaching credentials from USC, Maynard’s family has a focus on public education coursing through their veins. One of his sons and his daughter-in-law are both principals in the Paramount Unified School District, another daughter-in-law is a teacher at Long Beach Poly High, and his other son is the director of sports and aquatics at a YMCA

Fellow incumbent boardmember Celia Spitzer, was also present at Law's rally to show her support.

“He understands all the things that go on,” Spitzer said. "I think it’s important right now to have continuity of its boardmembers.”

As Law took the floor at the Hughlett’s residence, he wasn’t hesitant to break some bad news about the district's budget, albeit still reassuring his dedication to the job.

“We’re unfortunately anticipating another mid-year budget cut,” Maynard said. “I take serving on the school board as an honor and a privilege, and I’m going to work as hard as I can. I’m taking it seriously. I’ll be out there walking.”

One of Law’s goals is to concentrate on career technical education for the students that are “not necessarily going to go to Harvard, (and) not necessarily going to go to Yale.”

“They need the same kind of opportunities,” he added.

Earlier in the year, in light of Gov. Jerry Brown’s budget cuts, Law stressed that the quality of an ABC School District's education wouldn't be affected by declining funds.

“The environment is totally focused on the education of those kids,” Law said. “Your (the teachers) job is to give the best possible education to those kids.”
