ABC School Board Supports Lawsuit Against State Dissolution of Redevelopment Agencies

The ABC School Board met on Oct. 4 and welcomed the return of Superintendent Gary Smuts.

On Oct. 4, the ABC School Board gathered for its first meeting of the month. Back after a two-week absence, Superintendent Gary Smuts returned healthy and ready to complete the rest of his term -- the final school year before he retires next June.

Smuts reported that and are in the running for Golden Bell Awards, which, according to the California School Boards Association website, "recognizes exemplary programs in 22 major categories, which are essential to support teaching and learning."

Action Items:

A Resolution of the ABC Unified School District Supporting the Lawsuit Filed by the City of Cerritos and Other Parties Challenging the Constitutionality and Validity of AB X1 26 and AB X1 27

The board approved a resolution to support Assembly Bills 26 and 27, which dissolves redevelopment agencies and allows for cities to participate in an alternative voluntary redevelopment program. According to Smuts, this would do away with the agency that ABC is contracted with to build the new units the district is planning to move into.

“Because we are a party of interest, the district is mentioned in the lawsuit,” Smuts said.
